Animal Welfare

We are dedicated in providing the highest standards of animal welfare by ensuring the following criteria are met:

  • The Technical Manager is a member of the Humane Slaughter Association.

  • Lairage and Slaughter Hall staff are trained to University of Bristol's Animal Welfare Training Standards.

  • Animal Welfare Officers monitor the slaughter of all animals.

  • An Official Veterinarian is on site at all times of production to ensure Animal Welfare is maintained to the highest standard.

  • All our Slaughtermen are licensed.

Animal Casualty

Animals that are sick or injured during transportation are isolated upon arrival at the Lairage and examined by the resident Official Veterinarian.

Animals injured but fit to travel will require a completed Food Chain Information to Accompany an Animal for Slaughter Owners Declaration form. Cattle owners are advised to complete the form prior to transit. This can be downloaded from the link below and requires Adobe Reader to read the PDF (this can be downloaded from the link on the left).

Transport and Unloading

All livestock arriving at the Lairage must be transported in accordance with current legislation (Cattle can travel for a maximum of 6 hours and all traveling times are recorded).

Animal Welfare Officers monitor the process of unloading cattle into the Lairage. If they observe any contravention of current welfare legislation, or poor standards of welfare they will:

  1. Inform the haulage firm

  2. Inform the management

Penning

Animals are penned in accordance with the documented procedures.

Noise Control

To avoid distress to the livestock the Lairage is kept quiet with a ban on radios.
